On 1 October 2004, the final rights of access under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 came into force, in the UK. A new comedy film called Wheeling Dealing, starring Jane Horrocks and Kirin Saeed, and sponsored by ITN was premiered at the ODEON in Covent Garden on the 30 September 2004, to highlight the rights of people with disabilities.
Funded by a bequest from the Estate of the late Louis Stanley, who was chairman and joint managing director of British Racing Motors, the film takes a fresh look at images of disability, and is not afraid to have a good laugh along the way. The film was produced by Cambridge-based charity Berern Arts (registered charity no. 1073186) working in association with Split Second Films (under the then banner of tannemil).
The film Wheeling Dealing was made possible by a grant from the Estate of the late Louis Stanley, who died on 8th January 2004. Louis and his wife Jean were the prime figures in the management of BRM, the famous British motor racing team, which had so many successes in the 1970s. During the last years of Mr Stanley's life, he was a wheelchair user and it was his testamentary wish that from his Estate, charities helping people with disabilities should be encouraged to continue with their work and promote awareness of disability in the general community.
The film also stars the General Secretary of the Wheelchair Basketball Association, Steve Spilka, and members of his local team, Hereward Heat, including Ivan Newman, Commonwealth medallist, Olympic competitor and twice runner-up in the London Marathon wheelchair users event.
Wheeling Dealing was filmed in four days – two days in Cambridge and two days in London. Scenes were filmed in many different locations: the balcony of the ODEON Leicester Square; a street corner in Soho; Westminster; Stratford; Three Mills Studio; Bourn Airfield, Cambridgeshire; the yard at Warton and Clark Coal Supply and Skip Hire, Toft; Ballare nightclub, Cambridge (the only nightclub to have access for wheelchair users in the city); Cambridge University Athletics Ground; Comberton Leisure Centre; ITN news studio; and a dressing room at ITN.
